some people are already snagged their spots to watch this year's fireworks. though were not the only ones preparing for today's festivities. >> happy new year. >> reporter: inside hotels like this one in san francisco, party setup began early. dan burgess shows us where his guests will enjoy new year's cheers tonight. >> what we saw this year which was a little bit different, people made plans further ahead. >> reporter: he expects 700 party revelers within the hotel's americano restaurant and not far, free rides began at 6:00. >> last year i worked and it was really crazy. >> we are encouraging public transit, because of the dui issues, but what we do is that we have stepped up enforcement. >> reporter: at police headquarters, officers prepare for crowds of thousands. >> thank you. proceed to your beats and assignment. >> reporter: extra police presence will be seen along the embarcadero,

celebrated new year's eve all day long at chabot science center in oakland. the center hosted three balloon drops today at different time zones that marked the arrival of 20 torchlight organizers say it's a fun way for children to experience new year's without staying up past their bedtimes. >> it teaches kids that we're on the earth spinning around and there are different time zones obearth. >> this was the center's 12th annual new year's eve balloon drop. san francisco police are out it stop drunk drivers this new year's eve. they have stepped up dui patrols and are running checkpoints. ktvu's alex savidge what they are seeing live. >> reporter: the night is young right now and so far police haven't you been found anyone over the legal limit. officers are stopping cars randomly at this dui checkpoint own 8th street near folsom.

any suspects drunk-drivers can expect to start the new year behind bars. >> anything to drink tonight? >> no? >> reporter: on the hunt for drunk-drives this new year's eve. anyone who looks impaired will face a field sobriety test. dui checkpoints like this one hold special means. >> my husband was almost killed in a drunk-driving accident and it's terrifying and it would break my heart if money spokesman else lost a loved one because others were drinking and partying. >> reporter: san francisco police captain casciato says it seems like they are getting the message, he has a message for those who think they can throw back some cocktails and go behind the wheel. >> don't even try. it doesn't work. it's not worth, it because it is a ten-year prison sentence for yourself in terms of the costs associated, the stigma associated, the impacts on your life. >> on top of this dui

checkpoint, dozens of the motorcycle officers will be out in force in the downtown area. part their strategy is to spot drivers on coverage texting and pull them over to see if they are under the influence. although police would prefer to across sober drivers. you can see as this bus moves past us, plenty of tow trucks are on-hand at this checkpoint to take away the cars of any suspected drunk drivers arrested tonight. this checkpoint at 8th street and folsom will continue until 3:00 a.m. live tonight in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. several local transit agencies will be playing the role of designated-driver on new year's eve. among them, muni, san transand vta are offering free trips this evening. bart is also offering extended service until 3:00 a.m.. the new year will mean new laws include one that will come

down hard on repeat dui offenders. in 12 minutes a look at what changes in the state at midnight. in new york city, the singing and dancing in times square continues. eastbound though the ball dropped just about an hour ago. . mild weather and a star- studded cast of entertainers set the stage for what some estimate was a record number of people who came to times square. some of the revelers made their way to mid-town manhattan early this moe torn stake out their spot. one woman told reporters she might be cold for the day, but it's worth a life of memories. performers include toby keith, joe nichols, the eli young band and american idol runner-up lauren alainia. the show airs right here tonight right after the 10:00

news. in san francisco a wild police chase across the city in custody suspected of robbery and attempt kidnapping. police say the pursuit began about 2:20 in afternoon in the tenderloin and ended here what you see in the excelsior district. the chase ended when the suspect's car hit another parked car. police say the two suspects strid to run, but were quickly arrested. they could have grabbed somebody else and held them hostage. so yeah, it was scary when they came, but i was glad there were so much police here so fast. >> investigators at the end of the it appears the two men were trying to steal a laptop. oakland police are look for the person who shot and killed a 5-year-old boy outside of a taco shop last night. patti lee explains how the family and community are reacting to the rash of violence that seems to involve

young victims. >> reporter: the life of 5-year-old gabriel martinez, jr. was honored along with the lives of every person killed in oakland this year. the official homicide count for the year is 103, 11 more than last year. earlier today gabriel's siblings gathered across the street from where the boy was shot last night in east oakland, in front of members of his family. as we shot in the stomach, a senilingly random target. so far no arrest and no clear motive. >> well, i called my dad and he said they shot my brother. >> reporter: gabriel's siblings are defer stated and say their father is in shock. >> my dad is like, don't get scared and when he checked it was a little boy who got shot, my little brother. >> reporter: the family operators one restaurant and a taco stand around 54th and international. neighbors say they are well- liked. >> they are always playing

outside on their lot and their daddy works so hard. >> reporter: martinez is the third child shot and killed in oakland this year and today mayor jean quan and police chief howard jordan promised to make oakland a safer place. >> it's going to take a holistic place and put officers in places to make impacts. >> reporter: chief jordan says with more community involvement, 2012 could be a safer year. oakland, patti lee, ktvu channel 2 news. late today san francisco police arrestedded a woman accuse of killing another woman with a machete. sadiq was hospitalized with injuries from yesterday's attack, but this afternoon police arrested her as the suspect in the killing. when police respond they found the unidentified victim dead. at that point they say sadiq claimed the attacker was

someone else who had escaped on foot. an update on the squirrel monkey stolen from san francisco zoo. police say he was found just a couple of hours ago in golden gate park near stern grove. a sergeant told us a bystander spotted the monkey, named banana sam, pretty famous by now and managed to coax him in his backpack and call authorities. the zoo has increased security since a thief or thieves cut through mesh fencing around the exhibit and grabbed the monkey sometime thursday night. a reward of $5,000 is being offered for the culprit. this isn't the first time the zoo has had to beef up secret following an security. two koala bears were stolen and found hungry, but hurt. the boys later pleaded guilty to a crime. an arsonist has set another

dozen fires in the los angeles area. today's fires come just a day after more than two dozen fires were set in the same neighborhood. police say of the arsonist is targeting parked cars or trucks, but some homes have burned, including the one that once belonged to jim morrison. so far no one has been injured. $60,000 reward is now being offered for information in this case. crews in nevada are mopping up from an unusual winter wildfire. the fire near carson city erupted yesterday, fueled by 50 miles per hour winds. the fire burned 318 acres and at one point threatened several structures of the calm winds today helped to yell the flames. there is still some smoldering and 95 firefighters will keep an eye on hotspots through tomorrow. we're getting wofford a large earthquake off of japan. according to the u.s.g.s. the quake registered 7.0 and hit around 9:2 our time. it was centered 308 miles southwest of tokyo, about 100

3, 21! happy new year! in australia 12 minute of fireworks to usher in 2012, hundreds of thousands ushered in the special occasion along sydney harbour at the stroke of midnight, organizers called the celebrations one of the biggest in the world. a little closer to home on new year's eve, revelers took a walk on mare island. the shoreline preserve lighted trail walk is designed to get family and friends out walking together during the holiday season. after the walk along the trial, amblers are invited to have a cup of something warm and sit by the fire. the trail is scheduled to remain lit until midnight tonight. tomorrow is the last night, so

people are invited from:45 8 in the evening tomorrow. frustration is one thing fueling a recall of oakland's mayor. ktvu's allie rasmus caught up with those gathering signature. >> i have a petition to recall mayor quan. >> reporter: oakland residents signed this petition and says he is upset the way that the mayor handled occupy accident and the homicide rate. >> they are killing the children now, you know? it's sad that anyone gets killed, but when you start killing the babies it's a terrible thing. >> reporter: last night's shooting happened a few blocks away from where 3- year-old carlos navorro was shot and killed over the summer. there is now a mural at the site where he died. this morning some residents told us that they are increasingly frustrated with the violence and they are directing their frustrations at the mayor. >> mayor quan should be recalled or something, because

the roll tax cuts for turning around house republicans. today the president signed a sweeping defense bill pledging his administration will use broad discretion to ensure u.s. citizens suspected of terrorism are not detained indefinite will. mr. obama raised strong objokes provisions that could allow terrorism suspects to be detained indefinitely without a trial. today he said with military funding, due to expire on monday, he was signing the bill with reservation. the defense bill also includes sanctions that penalize foreign istitutions that do business can iran central bank. u.s. officials fear that tehran will view it as an act of war and push iran to take drastic measures. and an iranian negotiator called for new nuclear talks. this coming up september

the world will mark the 11th anniversary of the september 11th terror tacks, but as david lee miller reports the long anticipated national 7-eleven museum will anticipate 9/11 museum will not open. >> the museum as seen in this computer animation was supposed to open its doors next september 11th, new york city mayor bloomberg says that won't happen. >> there is no chance of it being open on time. work has basically stopped. >> reporter: the port authority of new york and new jersey, which owns the world trade center claims tea owed money. a spokesman told fox news "this is an issue that has been present for years, the port authority is actively negotiating with the aprofit parties to resolve it."

the munici foundation claims the port authority owes it $140 million because of delays in finishing the project and is reportedly considering a lawsuit. as each side points the finger of blame at others, relatives of those who died feel frustrated by the bureaucracy. >> americans, new yorkers, practically, are fed up with what goes on. it took a long-time for this memorial to be put here and now it's going to take a longer time to have the museum that everybody was hoping to look at. >> reporter: despite the controversy over the museum, work continues on one world trade center. the terror is now over 90- stories tall. officials say since the memorial opened last september, more than one million people have visited the site. new laws taking effect include stricter punish & for multiple duis. california drivers convicted of driving under the influence for a third time could have their

in the city of light and love, a new year's was rung in with champagne and what else? kisses. thousands gathered on the champs-elysees in paris tonight to celebrate. nasa engineers are working overnight to make sure the second of two probes enters the orbit of the moon. in september nasa launched the probes on their lunar mission. this afternoon the probe called grail-a, successfully entered orbit. tomorrow grail-b will permit 40 minutes of maneuvers gathering data about the moon's surface and core. antennas in the mojave and madrid will relay the information from the probe to nasa. the president of nigeria declared a state of emergency, following a series of attacks including a bloody string of church bombers on christmas day

arabic of pristine foster are already burned. we have just received video of the aftermath of a short chase in the east bay. a suspected drunk driver hit two vehicles, then snapped a power pole and right now three people are under arrest. alameda county officials say around 8:45 they pulled over a red acura for suspected dui. on east 14th around 167th avenue near san leandroo and the deputies say when they got out of their car, the drivergand hit a white mercedes as well as a truck before smashing into a telephone pole. that is what three people inside the acura got out of the vehicle and ran away. departments followed and arrested two of them. they say they found a loaded assault weapon in the acura. in addition, the driver of the truck was also arrested. suspected of driving drunk. the man who headed two of the most iconic san francisco museum has died.

pretty quiet out there for your new year's eve festivities. out right now we have partly cloudy skies and here is a look at the last sunset of 2011. as you can see on the bottom portion of your screen there. high clouds sweeping into the bay area, partly cloudy skies, and it has been a very dry month and unless we get a surprise rain downpour in the next hour or so, it's going to be a record-setting month. you can see the records to beat, 0 inches back in 1989. a very dry september. this is the second dryost december on record for san francisco. the third driest and also the

second driest for oakland and san josi. and really no significant rainfall, unfortunately showing you on the long-range weather maps. as far as overnight lows, fog could form around the delta, fairfield. forecast low of 37 degrees. santa rosa 31 and where san francisco starting out the new year at 43 degrees. there is a weak system that could clip parts the bay area into monday and as a result there is a very tiny chance of a sprinkle in the north bay. the main impacts for monday will be a few extra clouds and cooler temperatures. at least for new year's, patchy fog moving in from the pacific, with that party to mostly sunny skies and dry weather pattern will continue. those readings back up into the 60s, 60-67. here is the updated forecast models picking up on the fog, at least out towards the

central valley, around sacramento. could be a factor for tomorrow, impacting visibilities around fairfield and antioch and concord and still leftover patch into the early portion of the afternoon. then a few high clouds approaching the region by mid to upper afternoon. so definitely want to bundle up out there. temperatures to start out your sunday in the 30s, 30-40s and by 1:00, fair skies, party to mostly sunny as we do wrap up the afternoon hoursed. lower 60s around towards the delta, san josi tops out 67 and very close to 70, 69 in santa cruz. here is a look ahead, your extended forecast with your 2012 in view. quiet weather pattern with more cloud cover and no real significant rain clouds in the long-range western washington maps. heather and eric, if you are hoping for a weather pattern change with the new year, it's not going to happen, maybe a few sprinkles at most. >> got to get outside and
